The revised ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management System standard was published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on 15 April 2026, replacing ISO 14001:2015. Organizations currently certified to ISO 14001:2015 are expected to complete their transition to the new version within the three-year transition period, which ends in 2029.
The revised standard strengthens environmental sustainability requirements, climate-related considerations, leadership accountability and performance-based environmental management, while keeping the familiar high-level structure.
Key Changes in ISO 14001:2026
The updated standard places greater emphasis on:
- Climate change risks and opportunities
- Leadership involvement and environmental governance
- Measurable environmental performance objectives
- Lifecycle perspective and supply chain environmental controls
- Enhanced risk-based thinking
- Integration of sustainability into business operations
- Stronger operational resilience and change management
Organizations are expected to demonstrate more effective implementation and measurable environmental performance during certification audits.
How to Prepare
BCI CERT recommends beginning transition activities as early as possible:
- Conduct a gap analysis. Review your current Environmental Management System against ISO 14001:2026 to identify areas requiring updates or improvements.
- Update EMS documentation. Revise environmental policies, procedures, aspect-impact registers, operational controls, objectives and risk assessments where necessary.
- Train personnel. Provide awareness and training to top management, EMS coordinators, internal auditors and process owners on the revised requirements.
- Perform internal audits. Complete at least one full-cycle internal audit to verify the implementation and effectiveness of updated EMS processes.
- Complete a management review. Evaluate transition readiness, environmental performance, risks, opportunities and resource requirements.
- Transition audit. Your transition to ISO 14001:2026 can take place during a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit.
Organizations that prepare early can expect a smoother transition, reduced implementation risk and better regulatory preparedness. Learn more on our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System page, or contact BCI CERT at admin@bcicb.com or 1-844-BCI-CERT to plan your transition.
